One of the most gorgeous wedding venues in Charleston, S.C. is Lowndes Grove. This waterfront mansion has a rich history and has survived two major American wars. It’s a popular location for events and weddings in the area and has been featured in a popular Netflix show. I was fortunate to take part in a wedding styled shoot at Lowndes Grove this spring, hosted by Bespoke Workshop. All of the images turned out so amazing, and I can’t wait to come back in the future to take more photos!

Historical Wedding and Event Venue

The earliest known date of existence for Lowndes Grove is around 1701. George Abbott Hall purchased the plantation in 1786 and started the construction for the main house, which still stands today. At this time the property was just known as The Grove. In 1803, William Lowndes purchased the property and the name was changed to Lowndes Grove which is the current name that is used today. The number of acres went from 232 acres in 1770 to 14 acres in 2008. The entire property survived both the American Revolution and the Civil War.

President Theodore Roosevelt made a visit to the plantation in 1902 when he attended the South Carolina Interstate and West Indian Exposition. Lowndes Grove has been included in the hit Netflix show “Outer Banks” as it served as the house for the main character Sarah Cameron. I’m not gonna lie – I’m a hug fan of this show! I may have freaked out a bit getting to see the house! This entire property is included on the National Register for Historic Places.

There are so many beautiful aspects of Lowndes Grove that make it a must-have location for a wedding in South Carolina’s low country. The main house features furniture and decor circa 1786 that shows how the house would have included during the time period. There is a 700 foot private dock that extends into the Ashley River. This provides gorgeous sunset views for anyone that sets foot on the property. A 750 foot piazza gives guests the opportunity to look out over the river and oak trees. Lowndes Grove boasts multiple locations on site to host your wedding, rain or shine.

Bright Colors and Garden Vibes

Bespoke Workshop created “garden party” vibes for this wedding styled shoot at Lowndes Grove. Colors included peach, pink, ivory and baby blue. The main tables were places under the large main oak trees. The decorations were complete with large floral arrangements, varying sizes of candles, and clear crystal glasses. The model couple got married underneath a flower arch with the Ashley River as the background setting. We had a fun mocktail party for a cocktail hour, and I was continually stunned with Krystina’s wedding dress!

One of the cutest flat lays during the workshop was a welcome bag with items from local places around Charleston. At the end of the day, we captured some sunset photos on the dock and some flash portraits with another fun dress and a bottle of champagne. This wedding styled shoot at Lowndes Grove was an absolute dream!! If you’re engaged and planning on getting married at this venue, I would love to talk details with you about your special day!
