I love sharing education and knowledge with my potential clients, especially when it comes to giving my best tips for a successful engagement session! From making sure your ring is set to sparkle, to your clothes being cleaned and pressed, and learning how to be yourself in front of the camera are all essential to making sure your session goes smoothly!
Getting to know my couples before the big day is an important aspect of my business. That’s why I include an engagement session with all my wedding packages! This gives us more time to learn about each other and helps my couples practice posing before the big day. When my clients know what to do beforehand, wedding day portraits go a lot faster and they get more photo variety. Engagement photos are part of my client experience. I promise my couples that we will have a lot of fun while taking pictures. It’s important to me that my clients are like friends rather than a hired vendor.
Preparing for couples portraits might be a little overwhelming. However, by following my quick and easy advice, you will have a successful engagement session!
One aspect of an engagement session that gets overlooked is making sure your ring is polished and shiny! Even though a lot of my photos feature the couple themselves, I do capture some details of what the ring looks like up close and on your hand. Sometime we will plan for a photo location that doesn’t have a bathroom or a place to change. If you bring a second outfit, which I recommend for variety, then there’s a chance you may have to change clothes in your car.
For the ladies, I suggest wearing a matte lipstick color so it doesn’t transfer to the groom with all of your fun kisses. If you’re planning on wearing heels to your session, bring a pair of easy sandals just in case we have to walk a little bit. Then you can change into your heels when we get to the actual photo spot.
As far as outfit choices, here are some suggestions and things to avoid. Any type of bright color, such as red or neon colors like orange and green are best to leave to at home. Patterns with a design smaller than a quarter aren’t advisable. If you do want to wear a pattern, make sure one person compliments the pattern by wearing a solid color that’s included in the pattern. For example, if the bride is wearing a floral dress with blue and pink, the groom should wear a solid shade of blue or pink to coordinate!
I’m a light and airy photographer so I’m always in favor of neutrals! I love blush, tan, white, light blue, light pink, cream and gray. These are always good options and they won’t cast weird colors on your face. A lot of my couples love shooting at the beach, so long and flowy dresses are really nice for this type of location! They blow well with the wind and make for a pretty photo.
There’s no need to be a pro at posing! I will help you every step of the way. You will quickly become comfortable in the front of the camera and be a natural at poses on your wedding day! By using my best tips for a successful engagement session, you’re on your way to beautiful photos! If you’re ready to schedule a date, check my calendar by sending me an email!
